The importance of belonging
Why is a culture of belonging so important in the workplace? It’s actually very simple, with a culture of belonging people can do their best work. Underrepresented people can’t possibly achieve their full potential if the environment isn’t inclusive. I’ve had those experiences and I know many of you have. I’ve completely shut down once humiliated in front of my peers.
How can you make sure that you're doing what you can to foster a sense of belonging on your team? In this post, we'll explore a deeper meaning of belonging.
1. Bring your unique contributions – We’ve all had that feeling where someone congratulated us on a job well done and it made us feel good. When our unique contributions are recognized, it makes us feel like we are adding value and like we are part of the team. Recognize and appreciate all contributions.
2. Intervene. Don’t just watch – If you see injustice and want to help fight it, you need to proactively find a way support the people being harmed. A simple comment from you when you hear or see it. You may not be able to solve the problem, but you can create awareness with a comment such as ‘I don’t think you meant to imply what I heard’.
3. Supported in work and life – Nobody wants to feel like just another number in the sea of employees. When you show an employee that you value them at work and in life, it makes them feel a greater sense of belonging.
4. Proud of values and mission - Values that are inclusive and make everyone feel like they have a voice creates more support for your team members. Leaders have the opportunity to create a collaborative, respectful work environment. Leaders much eliminating bad behavior and reinforcing the collaborative respectful behavior that emulate the company values.
The workplace is a vital part of our lives and it is where we spend majority of our day. Belonging in that environment is essential for good work.
